Chapter 13

Ella

When I get home from work a few days later, I know that’s not going to be the case.

The bass from a techno dance track reverberates through the house from where it’s being blasted out upstairs. I can barely think straight.

Kate greets me in the hallway, wearing a faded grey t-shirt and leggings. Her hairs piled up in a messy bun, and there’s a mixing bowl tucked under her arm. “You’d better sort that sister of yours out.” She nods upstairs, furiously stirring the contents of the bowl. “I’ve been up to her once and asked her to turn it down, but she won’t listen to me.”

“What the bloody hell’s the matter with her?” I huff, stepping out of my shoes and hanging my coat up. “And what’s that racket?”

Kate’s eyes sparkle with the notion of gossip. “They’ve split up.”

I feel a trickle of relief. “Really? Are you sure?”

“Well, I think that’s what she mumbled when she stormed past me up the stairs earlier. We knew it would end in tears.”

Thank God. I’m not happy she’s upset, but I’m relieved Spencer’s not on the scene any longer for obvious reasons. Amy and him dating had also gone down like a lead balloon with Kate, especially after her recent break-up from Horny Harry.

“Well, she can’t stay up there all night like some forlorn teenager.” I stomp up the first two steps of the stairs. “Amy, turn that bloody music down,” I yell.

Miraculously, after a few moments the music turns down.

“Bloody hell, she must be feeling depressed if she’s done as she’s told.” Kate scoffs.

“At least we can hear ourselves think now,” I say, starting up the stairs.

“Hang on.” Kate blows a tendril of hair off her face and carries on mixing. “You’ve got a visitor.”

“What?”

She nods towards the living room. “Margot’s in there, waiting for you. Said it’s very important.”

Honestly, sometimes I could kill my friend. “You could have told me that, before I shouted my head off.”

Kate shrugs. “It doesn’t matter, it’s only Margot. Anyway, I’m baking a carrot cake to make up for it,” she calls over her shoulder, disappearing into the kitchen.

Maybe this time I’ll let her off.

Margot’s sat on the edge of the sofa, picking at her fingernails and looking even more fidgety than usual when I walk into the room.

“Ella, just the person,” she enthuses, leaping to her feet.

I give her an apologetic smile. “Yeah, I’m sorry, about the yelling. Little sisters, eh?”

Margot waves her hand dismissively. “Oh not to worry. I’m sorry to drop in on you unexpected like this again, but it seems that everything’s unexpected today.”

She’s talking in riddles. I brace myself for the answer to the question, I’m about to ask. “Why? What’s happened?”

“Well, everything’s happened so fast, you see.”

“What has?”

She pushes her tortoiseshell glasses up onto the bridge of her nose. “It’s all change, to do with the shop.”

I frown. She still not making any sense. “I don’t understand, what’s changed?”

“Well, that’s the thing, we don’t know for sure, yet.
